We have waited for this for a long time and it is finally here! The mystery of Eren’s key and his father’s basement have been present in the anime from the very start and here they are finally solved. So of course everybody was hyped for this episode!
The first thing we see in the episode is Armin awakening to see the Colossal Titan’s face. This scene was pretty enigmatic as it was just that face shedding tears and looking at Armin. Armin thought it was Bertolt that he saw but we can’t be sure since he wasn’t aware of what happened to him back then. Now there are people who think it was Armin’s inner Colossal Titan but nothing has been confirmed for now. Let’s just hope that this mystery will be solved soon enough in the upcoming episodes.
After that, Armin woke up next to the injured Sasha and after a few seconds, Eren was hugging him and shedding tears of happiness. The animation for this touching moment did remind us of the first season with its thick lines and it added to the nostalgia of the scene. Levi then appeared and asked Eren to fill Armin in on what happened after he “died.” Armin was shocked and felt guilty for Erwin’s death. He was really disgusted of himself but Levi tried to reassure him and told him that he was the one who chose him. And Hange soon intervened and she didn’t bother to tell him that she thinks they should have saved Erwin but she also told him that he now had to bear the weight of Erwin’s life and the power of the Colossal Titan on his shoulders. She also announced that she was the one who was going to take Erwin’s place as the commander, but is she really fit for that? Hange has always been one of the most important members of the scouts; but with that temper of hers, will she really be able to guide them as well as Erwin? And now that only 9 members of the Survey Corps are still alive, will she decide to add people or will she just rely on the survivors, knowing that now 2 of them can become titans?
After their talk with Armin, Mikasa, Eren, Levi and Hange went to explore the basement. All along the way, Eren and mikasa were remembering their lives as kids, with flashbacks of them running around the place. A lot of these scenes were clips from the first episode from the time when they were living peaceful lives. They even reminded us of Hannes, the soldier who saved them when the titans attacked their wall. This part was filled with nostalgic memories of the first seasons and it must have touched the heart of any true Attack on Titan fan.
When they got to the basement and finally found the door, Eren’s key wasn’t able to open it! It probably came as a surprise to a lot of people and I even started thinking that we won’t get to see the basement after all. But an impatient Levi broke the door open with a kick and they immediately started exploring the place. When they first entered all they saw was a regular doctor’s office but they soon discovered that there was more into it. Mikasa found a keyhole in the desk and it was what Eren’s key was supposed to open. This is where we fell for the fake out a second time. After feering a dead end because of the door, we didn’t expect the show to pull the same trick twice. But when Eren opened the drawer and found it empty I must say we weren’t prepared for that at all. Fortunately, Levi soon figured out that it was a false bottom. And under there, Grisha was hiding 3 books and those are eventually going to enlarge their knowledge of the outside world. They already found a picture that Eren’s father left and it wasn’t something they saw before. And to our surprise, it did tell us that there was a civilisation outside the walls, people are living in the world that those inside the walls are not aware of and Eren’s Father had explored it. Attack on Titan had hinted in previous episodes that there was such a place but now it is finally confirmed.
And for the first time in the show, we got a scene after the ending of Grisha and his sister when they were younger showing us that they escaped the wall. That probably made us even more hyped for the next episodes which promise to reveal more secrets about this world they are living in. We will eventually get more explanation about this humanity outside the walls which seems technologically quite advanced compared to the world inside the walls.
After these thrilling events, the 8th episode is promising to be even better. It will be titled “That Day” and will let us know more about this outside world and how Eren’s father discovered it. More mysteries will be solved in this episode and it will help us have a more clear view of the truth behind this civilisation.
